Is it much more survival, or do the alters just switch at random?

i would feel that it would depend on why the individual developed the disorder. if it was to deal with a harsh situation, then it would make sense that it would come out during the scenario.

There are no "random switches" - you don't eat unless you're hungry do you? In any Identity disorder there must be a causative factor - the threat to ones weak ego, snaps the other ID to take charge. Normally, this occurs during waking hours, and one doesn't usually wake up in the "alter ego".
ReplyDeleteSwitches aren't random, but the reason for the switches varies. For example, a switch may occur so that an alter can deal with "unacceptable" information that others couldn't deal with, or it could be as simple as an alter appearing in order do what she or he is good at (for example, driving or making a business presentation.)
ReplyDeleteActually they are wrong..... switches can be random. I often go to sleep and one of my alters wants to have some time to paint or write or even just watch TV so they come out while I am sleeping.... I'll get up in the morning and find a new painting or a bowl of popcorn on the coffee table. They also come out when I am stressed or triggered but they can come out just because they feel like it......
